have had the 50mm 1.8 for 2 years now and always loved it. It's fast, reasonably sharp and performs well. BUT. I've always been fascinated and curious about what the 50mm 1.4 would do for me after loving the 1.8 so much, and as the lens is so inexpensive, bit the bullet the other day and ordered from DWI online. So happy with the results this lens puts out, couldnt recommend it higher.

I've recently purchased it and I just love it too. I'm using the lens on a full frame so its great for environmental portraits and I just love the DOF, its magical!!!!

It is a great lens and well worth the extra price over the f1.8. I recently sold mine and went with the Sigma and it is even better again - when it fouses accurately haha.

+1 on the Sigma. Mine's been behaving quite well recently though. Awesome on a crop body.

+2 on the sigma - I recently did a trip to Melbourne and this was the only lens on my digi body the whole time.
(I also took a film body with a 28 2.8 and Ilford HP5 400 film for any wide angle work I wanted)

I love my 50 1.4 lens. When I went overseas last year I took it and the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS L series lens with me. I found the 70-200 lens restrictive in some places, so the 50 mm was the lens that I took most of my photos with. I also took my Canon 10-22 wide anlge with me, but it too was restrictive, but wonderful for the lovely wide angled landscapes that I was able to take. Next trip I think I will just take my 18-200 Canon lens and the 50 mm 1.4 with to to cover all bases.
I also upgraded from the 50mm F1.8 to the 50mm F1.4 but I have to say (in my opinion) the only real advantage I've found is that the lens mounting ring is metal and not plastic as in the 1.8. The low light focusing speed is far worse than my old 1.8. I do a lot of nightclub work in town and the 1.4 is constantly hunting back and forth trying to find the right point where as my 1.8 used to get it very quickly.
