    Nikon 28mm f/1.8 AF-S

    new AF-S 28mm f/1.8

    Looks good.

I've been chasing an old ais 28/2 for ever and a day(at a reasonable price, that is) .. I'm always getting beat on prices by a dollar or two.

Those old bangers can fetch up to $400-$450 on ebay .. yeah it's always the one I bet on

This one looks like fun at a decent starting price.
If it comes down to about $600-500 over time, I reckon it'd be worth the investment.
Especially taking into consideration that the current 28/2.8 sells for about $300 and that one is AF-D and 1.3 stops slower.

I'd rather have the new one at $600, rather than the old timer ais or slower AF-D lens at $300-400 ...

If all of Nikon's recent 1.8G primes are any indicator, this should be another stellar bang-for-buck lens.

I've never seen the point in 28mm primes, they seem very much like the lens for the person who already has everything else.
Take a step forward with a 24mm lens or two steps back with a 35mm and you are almost at the same place.
Having said that, it's good to see Nikon pumping out the prime lens upgrades

I see a helluva lot to like about this 28mm lens, it is of the "new" generation of glass, it is truckloads cheaper than either the 24 or 35 versions of the "new" primes.

I'm with you on this. Great savings and FL for FX users.

The jury is still out on this lens ( in Australia at least ) as I drove 800 klm round trip with good intentions of trying one at The Digital Show in Melbourne yesterday only to find that someone had left the demo copy in Sydney !!!!!!!

Sometimes I wonder if Nikon Australia is really a worthwhile entity, I am sure that all the sales reps who were in attendance ( heaps of them ) had all their accommodation and meals + probably hefty bar tabs well sorted out but surely it isn't too much to ask that they manage to include samples of all gear that they have in stock.

Mind you, the 35mm F/1.4 and the 200mm F/2 that I did try are very impressive lenses, just need to get the credit card extended a little.

I definitely think it is attractive especially if they don't make a 24mm F1.8G. What I am really hoping is that it will be followed by an 18 F1.8G or a tilty. Now there is a sexy lens . Interesting to see Nikon just filed patents for a 10mm F4, 28 F1.4, 17mm F4 Tilt shift along with a 16-30 F4.5-5.6. Definitely intrigued by a 10mm F4 and the tilt shift in the wide range.

An 18 or 20mm f/1.8 would be a nice addition to the range.

Either way, it's about time Nikon have begun the process of updating the aging and irrelevant f/2.8 AF-D prime lens range.

It's been too long in coming, and the due process of market forces diminishing the actual price of these new lenses has only been delayed for longer than it should have been had these lenses already been announced and released!

Does it really matter than the lens is 28mm in focal length? Any new faster than a zoom lens can only be a good thing, considering that Nikon have recently been concentrating on lenses of dubious market appeal(eg. 40mm and 85mm Dx macro lenses).

Any new lens announced by Nikon can only be a good thing. The majority of us simply want more options in terms of price(affordability) quality speed and usefulness.

This 28/1.8G is a great lens : very sharp edge to edge wide open on the D800.
I've been using it for one week now and have taken more than 1000 photos with it, mostly @f/1.8 !
