We installed the option in case we need to get members attention urgently at any time. So we don't tend to use the username feature that much.
For example, say something major was happening with the site and we needed to take the site offline for half a day or similar, we would use this feature to get your attention in the thread lists, so that as many members as possible are made aware of what was going to happen.
