I use a Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 which is quite sharp and nice all round to fill in for the Sigma 10-20mm F/4.5 that I use. I have yet to get a 70-200mm

Big jump to a $2k lens.
I'd thoroughly recommend the 24-120 VR

Constructive Critique of my images always appreciated
I use on my D7000 a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 (awesome for low light), a 55-200mm zoom (fantastic lightweight and cheap zoom) and the Tokina 11-16mm.
To "fill the gap" (lots of foreground space?) I suggest you trying to get closer to whatever it is you are shooting instead.
With my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, I use the standard 18-105 Nikkor lens and the 70-200mmf/2.8,300mmf/4 so I need a better bag
cheers
