Site Outages : today (Performance, Error 500s, timeouts etc)

Apologies for the site outage this evening. The entire server ended having to be restarted. Kym (mainly) and myself are scratching our heads over the cause.

We can throw a 100 hit query at the site in about 1/4 of a second and it copes fine, but then later, with less demand the site just seems to not be able to deal with the traffic on it. We are trying to find the cause, but in the short term, we may experience more of these outages. Every moderator on the site, now has a tool to restart the site if it goes down, unless like this evening, the server went down completely, the mods can make the entire site reboot as well as Kym and myself.

So once again, my apologies, and we will keep you informed as much as we can.

    Malformed header

About 1/4 hour or so ago I got a malformed header response, 500?
And a search for my threads I have posted in took 30 seconds.

Yes I had read that, and it was after I had read that and said thanks that I got the header response.

The mods and I have a tool that shows us the server load, it looks like this:

    Uptime: 0 Days 2:35:06 MySQL Uptime: 0 Days 0:16:58 Page generated in 0.438 seconds with 18 queries Memory: 9.25 Mb [Server Load Averages (1:5:15) 2.54 : 3.42 : 3.34]

When the last figures (1:5:15) 2.54 : 3.42 : 3.34] show the bold one (2.54) going over 5.00 we have a problem and the site starts to lock members out. What we are experiencing at present is wild fluctuations in the load on the server, for no apparent reason.

    Uptime: 0 Days 2:37:25 MySQL Uptime: 0 Days 0:19:17 Page generated in 0.790 seconds with 18 queries Memory: 7.75 Mb [Server Load Averages (1:5:15) 5.95 : 4.26 : 3.63]

    Uptime: 0 Days 2:39:58 MySQL Uptime: 0 Days 0:21:50 Page generated in 1.572 seconds with 19 queries Memory: 9.25 Mb [Server Load Averages (1:5:15) 2.51 : 3.35 : 3.37]

Note the uptime on these three 2:35:06 and 2:37:25 and 2:39:58 and how that bold number shows 2.54 in one and 5.95 in the next and then back down to 2.51 in the third, this is the fluctuation we are seeing and cannot resolve why at present.

Yep, which is why i said in it that we might continue to experience issues in the short term. I have added another post to the thread showing the fluctuations in server load we are seeing and cannot determine the cause, just yet.

Not helpful really as a member, but it at least explains a bit about what is happening, so you have more of an understanding of the issues we are facing. The damn server is like a yo-yo at present..hehe

    Data base error

Seems to be happening at about 10pm as I look at the site over the past few days.
Goes off line for a while then comes back - strange.

We also know that some members can be online, and using the slte, while others are getting the error. Last night whilst Kym and I were talking, I was getting the malformed header error, and he was happily browsing the site.

Again, apologies for this, we are working on it.

If it helps at all, I was getting the rc10.overture.com thing happening yesterday, which is a DNS problem or malware depending on which google search result you believe. It was hanging at that stage and crashing firefox.

    Odd behaviour

    For Kym,

I am getting occasional odd behaviour on the site recently:
    1. Very slow access followed by the following:

    2. Overlapping of adverts on site data:

Is this a site problem or something at my end?

Kym is still working on it Mary Anne, he's restarted the site just recently and it seems more stable to me since, fingers crossed.

Yeah guys some odd things happening at the moment, Kym's restarted the site recently and for me it seems more stable but the odd thing is that the problems don't seem to be consistent site wide, which makes tracking down the problem more difficult.

Are you sure it's not a malware attack? I keep getting little redirections to some photobucket address.

That would most likely be from the site advertiser banner ads. I store them on my PB account to help keep site bandwidth down and they are linked into AP from PB

I'm really thinking that the server change was a big mistake... Nothing but trouble since the start.
Malformed headers, database errors and long delays on each click...
