This page is a chapter in the book Panoramic Guides (Index).
Here is a brief summary of the steps you should follow when capturing photos to stitch into a panoramic image

[top]In the field...

  • manual everything! Use a fixed manual exposure
  • use 50mm or longer Focal Length
  • find an exposure that can deal with the lightest and darkest bits
  • use portrait aspect (you lose a bit top and bottom - portrait gives you more to work with)
  • remove filters, especially polarisers as these will give a strange cast to the sky as the angle changes
  • level your tripod
  • pan with tripod, use plenty of overlap (20-30% on each side)
  • mark the end points
  • figure out the software when you get home

[top]Post Process With CS3/CS4/CS5

  • Select File/Automate/Photomerge
  • Select the images
  • Leave the rest of the settings as default
  • Click OK and wait...

    and wait...
  • Flatten image and crop
  • Save your full sized image
  • Resize and publish a web version

You can play with the PS options as you get used to doing this.
