Hullo

I have a Nikon D700 + a 24-70 mm lens + a Nikon 28-300 mm lens

I am going to Namibia soon. Landscape and animals.

Some advise whether I can only take the 28-300mm lens or would it be necessary to take the 24-70 mm lens as well for Landscape photography.

I think the 28-300mm will be a great choice since I wouldn't recommend changing lenses in that environment. 28mm is wide enough for landscape using a FX camera. I think you'll use the lens at 300mm majority of the time. Happy trip.

Is it a holiday or a photo trip?
If the prior, take the 28-300 and you'll be fine.
If the later, take the 24-70 as well, it will smoke the 28-300 for most applications at the comparible focal lengths and for landscape work, superzooms are generally masters of none, jack of all trades and the 28-300 is no excepton. Just be careful to ensure the camera is protected when doing a lens change, and use each lens to its strengths.

Above all have fun :).

On our Botswana trip last year I took the D300 with a 70-200 2.8 and a TC2.0. This combo gave enough reach and flexibility. The 28-300 on the D700 will be fine. A friend was using a similar Canon lens, 28-300 I think it was, and she was very happy. That was the only lens she had in the bag.

We are heading off the Namibia in September. Hiring a Hilux and camping around the National Parks etc.

The animals tend to be far away so you really need a 400 plus lens and as such take at least the 28-300.

However some of the best photos are around the camp fire so take both lenses.

Also it might sound stupid but don't wander off from your camp or vechile and always carry water.

The desert is a hostile place and you will not be the first or last tourist that gets eaten by a lion.

Another tip if your vechile breaks down stay by the vechile and wait for help.

Enjoy your trip you are going to have a great time..

Sue,
You'll certainly need the 300mm and as you have figured preferably the 24-70 as well. So a large plastic bag and be prepared to change lenses in the vehicle. Generally you will know well ahead of time when you should fit the 24-70, and at other times carry the 28-300.
Dont forget to bring back lots of memories - not everything is best viewed through a lens.
Cheers.

Deserts in Namibia can be big wide open places, which needs lots of foreground stuff to keep it interesting. I wouldn't leave the 24mm lens at home. The light can be super super harsh, and the best landscape stuff will happen just after the sun has gone down.
Sossusvlei is incredible, as is luderitz. You need 4wd drive to get to the interesting stuff in the skeleton coast.
Compared to other african countries, the animals in namibia are a little difficult to access or get close to. Etosha is a little hit and miss unless you get the right time of the year. You are definitely going to need the 300mm reach to get close enough to anything, and even then its going to be a bit short.
I would take both lenses.
If you are up for it, the people are a lot friendlier than in some other places in Africa, and some of the locals have incredible faces and thats the 24-70

Have fun

I would take the 28-300 on the camera
and 24-70 as backup.
Or do you have other choices such as 80-400 or D7000?
