If you were concerned about 20 meg images and photo stroage - try storing THIS one !!

It weighs in at 111 Gigapixels, was made with the Canon 5D mark II and a 400mm-lens.
It consists of 1.665 full format pictures with 21.4 mega pixel, which was
recorded by a photo-robot in 172 minutes. The converting of 102 GB raw
Data by a computer with a main memory cache of 48 GB and 16 processors took
94 hours. The picture is supposed to be the largest in the world.

G'day Bob

nice one to contemplate on our "little toy computers..."
Many years ago Kodak produced an image for display in [I think] Pennsylvania railway station - it was 40 feet wide x 10 feet high and printed from a neg on a 220-roll film - printed onto a single piece of photo paper too.

+1 gig in this image of Shanghai. Supposedly 272 gigapixels originally - down to about 112 for the finished piece.

I wonder how they would get on resizing it for the web?

Not a fan of it honestly. I would respect the achievement when it is done with a single photo, not a million composites joined together. I still prefer the Kodak achievement mentioned above.

James miss quoted the original size of this one - the maker says the RAW stitched file was 1.24TB - cropped down to 1.09TB - then 272 Gigapixels and 112 Gigapisels finished. 12000 images shot with a 7D, 400mm and 2x converter. Shot with the Gigapan Pro over approx 9-10 hours. Massive session!

You're not wrong! However, camera makers know that most people who use cameras are not photographers, and if there's one basic rule of mankind it's "size matters". :)
