Has anyone with SB900 gotten new gels for the holder? Do you buy the strips and not use the holder, or do you buy big sheets and cut into a shape similar to the included gels?

Back before all my gear got stolen ( :( ) I used to use the Rosco gels from ########e (http://##############.com.au/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=255) with velcro dots stuck to the gel and the flash, also available from ######### (http://##############.com.au/store/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=116). However, because of the length of the gel the velcro needed to be very close to the end of the flash. This would have caused problems when trying to use the Nikon diffuser on the SB-900 (it wouldn't fit because the velcro dots were in the way). I didn't have a diffuser for my SB-800 so I stuck the dots on that. The results were great.

Now I have my new gear I have 3No. SB-900's and I needed a different solution, this was found in the form of Honl Speed Straps (http://www.honlphoto.com/speed-strap.html) and the corresponding Colour Effects gels (http://www.honlphoto.com/10-pack-filter-k10.html). This is the perfect solution as the strap is removable allowing use of the diffuser when needed. You can also make your own modifiers (snoots etc.) with some velcro on them and attach them to the Speed Strap. The Straps have a rubber compound on the inside of them helping to prevent slipping on the flash. I got mine through my local Camera House (around $45 for the Colour Effects gels and $20 for the Straps I think). I did a quick Google search and looks ############ (http://##############.com.au/store/catalog/index.php?manufacturers_id=5) sell the Straps, also looks like you can buy them here (http://www.d-d-photographics.com.au/honl.htm) or here (http://www.digitalcamerawarehouse.com.au/category1040_1.htm) (as a starter).

You could potentially buy a set of Rosco gels and cut them to fit, however you would have to check the dimensions. The Image Melbourne site says they are 38mm x 80mm, could you cut these to suit the SB-900 holder?

The sets can be cut to fit into the sb900 holder, but to make it really 'fit' it'd have to be much taller so it hooks into the holder tabs. The rosco gels are max 2" tall so they can't be used like that.

Wondering whether to use those or buy big sheets to cut. I don't have a 2nd flash yet tho I have some sb200s, and if I got a 2nd it'd be a manual flash w/o a holder.

Adam, you will notice that a lot of your post has been 'blocked' including links. This is because the site you are trying to promote has repeatedly spammed AP, and every offer I have made to them to advertise on the site has been ignored. Every few months they try and sign up and promote their site for free. So now I have blocked their name and website from displaying on AP.

Rick I am not trying to "promote" anyone. I was simply advising the OP of the place I bought my gels from, and that I was very happy with them. As you've blocked the links, I don't know any other suppliers for the product and no one else has bothered to reply the OP has no more insight than when they started the thread!

Well I got some sample size gels, they're too small to velcro but can be cut to just fir the sb900 gel holder
i cut but haven't tried using them, I'm not sure if there'll be any 'white leak' around the edges, and I don't know how I'd test for that either.
