one is more a sports nature birding type camera the other is a landscape portrait type camera........from what ive seen anyway.......so it all boils down to what you shoot both are good cameras :)

my 2 cents ;)

they are both full frame around the same mp different image sensors about the same frame rate i believe, the 1d mark 3 is more the sporting/wildlife camera ?
seeing as you use grips on your body's i suggest holding/ using a series one if you can as they feel nice in the hand ? not as chunky with a grip attached to a normal body. regards

5D2 has:
- Video
- Better LCD/image preview
- More pink colour tones
- DIGIC IV
- Maybe 1/3 stops better at ISO 800+
- Smaller form factor

1Ds3 has:
- (Much) Cleaner files at low ISO
- More Yellow colour tones
- Dual CF redundancy
- More AF options
- Better Build
- More expensive (more than double the price)

Impossible Choice for me personally, if not for the LCD/image review issue I would go for the 1Ds3, but given that issue, I am uncertain. Only clear decision is that the 1Ds4 will be better than both

You might be thinking of the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV, which has a 1.3x FOVCF and can shoot at 10.5fps.

This camera is beneficial to sports and wildlife shooters because of the frame rate, increased AF points (and better AF in general), and crop factor; ie, it's not necessary to discard pixels in cropping to achieve tighter framing.

The 1Ds Mark III still has a higher pixel density though, so there's more pixels per player even after cropping

Yes, the 1D, not the 1Ds. The thread is about the 1Ds, not the 1D.

Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III = 5fps
Canon EOS-1D Mark IV = 10fps
Canon EOS 5D Mark II = 3.9fps

Don't think I could be bothered with any of the built in grip cameras.

IMHO, the '1' range is the best of the Canon cameras. My 1DsMkII was a terrific camera. I would choose it over the 5D any model.

+1

With the 5D MkII there's the option of adding a grip, and I don't think the slower fps rate would be a big issue for me.

was trying to decide between these two. The price difference is quite large + I want a camera with video. Ideally id like the 1d4 and 1ds3 :D
I would take 1ds3 if you only have one camera. but with 1d3 I choose the 5d2.

I think the '1' series also has better weather sealing, based on reviews.

Love my 5D MKII. Have the 7D as well, but it seems to stay home most of the time.
Rather spend my money on new glass than the 1D - well that is my opinion.
