Looking to purchase a 50mm mainly to take travelling or just out and about. Any suggestions as to what is a good lens.:xmas:

I think the 35 1.8 is probably a better all around lens for a crop camera

Still, if you want cheap a 50 1.8 is that, and sharp

The 50 1.4 is faster both in terms of light and focus speed

Thanks Kiwi,

So you reckon something like AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G rather than the 50mm

Nikon's 50/1.8 about $120 new from the HK/USA sellers and almost the same used. For about $250 you will get an AF50/1.4, bit faster AF and more light as Kiwi has said above. 35/1.8 is about $200 by comparison.

What other lenses do you have or what do you want to do with this new lens?

Obvious question, what's wrong with the 18-105 ? And what focal length do you use the most ?

I have the 50mm f/1.8 and tthe Nikon D90. I think the 50mm lens is too long for general street photograhy. 35mm is the absolute longest I would half-consider and the 35mm f/1.8 is good value especially as a grey import. A 28mm or 24mm lens would be better still but both of those are f/2.8 and you may as well stick ot the kit zoom which offers VR.

I didn't know Sigma made a 10-24mm but such a range is pretty good. I have the Nikon 10-24mm zoom and it is an excellent range for street photography although I haven't used it for such.

Just been out taking photo of fire, and was shooting at 18-60mm. This is an ok lens, but it is 3.5-5.6 and at 50mm it is about f5.

I don't need to get a DX lens do I? If I want to upgrade to a full sensor camera later on, I want to make sure my lens will work with both.

no, you odnt need a DX lens per se

Nothing's wrong with F/5 for this sort of stuff, Id actually be shooting more like F/8 or so in good light

Which mine is that? I see a Normet and maybe a 1300 bucket.

I am guessing you have the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom. Nikon don't make any zooms that end at 60mm.

Probably the best thing you could do is have a wander around with the lens set at a specific focal length and see how it suits. You might try 24mm, 28mm, 35mm and 50mm. If these are not marked on the zoom ring, estimate.

See how you go framing images without moving the zoom ring.

When you find the one that is the most useful, you have figured out what lens to get.

Nikon make reasonably priced 24mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.0 and 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8 lenses that can be used on full-frame and DX cameras.

18-105 actually Peter.

60mm referenced from post #10 but I now note that post #5 indicates 105mm.

I bought a 50mm 1.8 d from teds. I think i paid $175.00 and free postage.
I did not see a need for me to get a 1.4 and also looked at the 35mm but with that costing around $550 i could not justify the $ at the moment.
As others have said have a play and work out what you use more (24,35,50 etc) and take it from there.

I actually have purchased a AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G - will start to play with it soon. Jasmin, what was the model of the 50mm? Seems a good price.

AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8d
Was $199 but I got them to price match so they knocked $25.00 off and gave me free postage.
