Has anyone got one or tried one and whats the thoughts is it worth the $1500 or would you go the 28-300 3.5-5.6 @ $1000 ??

It's difficult to help you if we don't know if you are shooting FX or DX etc.

If you shoot DX you will get a coverage equivalent to 50mm - 210mm in FX terms.
I think the 28 - 300 may be more versatile.

Nikon D700 and waiting patiently for an upgrade trvelling overseas early next year 6wks total round europe and trying to lighten the load taking lowepro aw 400 nikon 14-24 f2.8
70 -200 f2.8 ??? 50mm f1.4 SB900 have 24-70 f2.8 also but it is starting to get a bit weighty wondering if 28-300 is any good and will it replace the 24-70 and 70-200 or will i regret not taking the full kit. Gets heavy after days walking 5 kids and wife in tow by the way.???

Probably the wrong person to comment on this but I actually have a D60 with the 24-120 f3.5-5.6G IF ED, not sure if this is the same lens you are after but I think its a brilliant piece of glass, only piece of Nikon gear I have and every bit as good as my Canon equipment:confused013
