I have been thinking about buying the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS for a while and am wondering if there is a difference between the 'white' boxed one or the normal 'black & white' boxed one ?

Is it just the box colour, or are they made in a different place/country ?

The white boxed one was part of a 5d + 24-105 kit as far as I know

eduard is correct; if the lens comes in a plain white box, it was intended to be bundled with a 5D or 5D Mark II.

It is indeed the same lens as the one which comes in a normal box, and Canon's lenses are made in Japan.

As I understand it, suppliers aren't supposed to sell the kit-intended lenses separately.

Note that the 24-105 was introduced long before Canon started bundling them with 5Ds and later 5D Mark IIs.

thanks eduard and Xenedis for your replies.

my Canon EF-S 18-200mm IS was made in Taiwan

Interesting.

Maybe EF-S lenses are made there instead of Japan.

That lens is on special at Photocontinental but it's even cheaper if you're prepared to buy overseas.

I think Photocontinental have it for 1299 at the moment.
DDP have it for 1149 over the counter, but I found it last night on DWI for 983 plus freight 35 = 1018 :)

Xenedis, my EF-S 10-22mm is made in Japan which that blows that theory ;)

My understanding (perhaps incorrect) was that all Canon lenses were made in Japan.

Maybe some of the EF-S kit lenses are manufactured elsewhere.

Many Canon lenses contain a code stamped on their rear which indicates when and where they were made.

See http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx for more details.

Of course, if the lens believed to have been made in Taiwan does not contain such a code, it probably won't be possible to tell where it was made.

My 50 mm f1.8 II has "Made in Malaysia" stamped on it along with a code. The box is black and white. My 60 mm f2.8 Macro USM has 'Made in Taiwan" stamped on it, again along with a code. The box is white and red. My 70-300 mm IS USM has 'Made in Japan" lettered rather than stamped on it. Box is black and white with a red stripe. What gives?

that was the first outting, so have not done anything else with it yet, but hopefully will get to play with it more this weekend if it is not too wet.
Shame it didn't arrive in the morning so that I could have tried it out at the railway museum :)
