I recently bought two Nikon F55's on separate auctions each with a 70-300 and 28-80 and a bag coincidentally - I decided I could 'experiment' with one of the lenses I will never use ....[ both sets cost $50 each ]

There's the screw drive at the back ....

There's the cogs that connect the screw drive to the lens focus system ....

And the electronics ......

These contacts appear to relay the focal length to the lens pins

I still have some work to do to get it fully apart :)

Cool, can you see how hard it is to scratch the front element ?

Maybe that will be my next project with the other lens :)

There's the aperture blades out of the way ....

Now there's a good reason for this 'experiment' and it looks like it may just work .
Here's a shot from my Fuji F31fd which doesn't go very wide

Now we fit the front element from the 28-80 lens ....

And we have a wide angle F31fd !

Do you ever get bored Desmond?

Nah, didn't think so. :D

At least this series hasn't got objects bursting into flame or being decimated with swords -----

or is there still hope left after the weekend? :p

Tonight I tried to 'modify' the F55 body - unsuccessfully :(

The command dial ....

Today at work I decided to take a few snaps of the fuel pump I pulled apart and overhauled .... may explain why I like pulling things apart :)

Sort of - I'm an auto electrician , photographed this guys wedding and he asked me to come work for him since everything in the diesel industry is going electronic .
Now I'm learning to overhaul diesel pumps , turbos and injectors .
Since I'm doing the work I decided to start another apprenticeship so now I'm studying to be a "diesel fuel technician " :)

ok cool. back in my teens I started a diesel fuel injection apprenticeship, never finished i though. 6 months of >take dirty injector apart and clean>new nozzle>shim/test/shim/test and I was done:D all the best with yours

I've only done a few pintle injectors , we have a guy who only does injectors all day so it may take a while before I've done enough to pass a test :)

What a pity that DXO Optics Pro isn't planning to disseminate a distortion-correcting algorithm for an F31/part 28-80 combo! Maybe you should email them! :)
