Hi All,

I'm trying to find out if an extender & a teleconverter are the same thing? I have an 18-200 lens on my 50d which I want to use for some car racing shots. I'm after something to give me something closer to a 400mm.

Thx

Tony

Hi
Yes the extenders are the same as tele-convertors, but they are designed to be used on fixed focal length lenses. You will find that the image IQ will suffer and you will also lose autofocus and a stop of light, found this out from personal experience.

The Canon tele-extenders (aka tele-converters) are not compatible with the lens you have.

They can only be used with:

any L-series prime 135mm or longer;
all four 70-200mm L zooms;
the 100-400mm L zoom; and
the 400/4 DO IS.

could try a 200mm f/2.8 with a 2x extender. Will be a 400mm f/5.6 with decent IQ. It wont be as good as other 400 lenses, but will be a more flexible and cheaper option. A 200mm f2.8 mark 1 is around $500-600 (used).

Thanks for info all. Looks like I'm outta luck. I want to purchase my 24-105 before I buy a long tele. I'll see how I go with what I currently have :(
