Does anyone know if there are any effective programs in order to catalouge photographs by things such as topic, date taken, other comments, and a thumb photograph for reference? Or is it just as easy to use something like a spreadsheet or word program?

hEAps! I use an old one called ACDC 5, though it's not free. Canon supply Zoombrowser with cameras, but I never liked it. There are lots of free ones on-line, just type "free foto catalog". Picajet is one of the 1st. And if you get any computer mags, like APC or PC User, they usually have them on the DVD. Am.

Lightroom, aperture etc. These are all primarily DAM software (Digital Asset Management). Ie, cataloguing software

Do you know if there are any good free alternatives on the market?

Good and free in the same question. I doubt it. You will either one or the other I think although just by typing fee photo cataloguing into my browser I came up with this:

I did use the Canon supplied Zoombrowser and found it ok until I went to Lightroom, it is brilliant!

I reckon LR is worth the money, Thomas.

G'day Thomas

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it, even PS Elements has a Catalogue & Organiser...

Adobe Bridge is the go! The Keywords, Groups, Stacks etc are simple to setup.
You can see all your images - JPEGs and Raw - as thumbnails or convert to full screen simply by pressing the space bar. It will open any images straight into Photoshop or Camra Raw with a double click.
It comes with all versions of Photohsop, and now CS5 has Mini Bridge which works from inside Photoshop.
