I am on a budget and looking for a reasonable monopod - can anyone share their thoughts on something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Deluxe-pro-3-Way-pan-head-71-1795mm-monopod-Case-/290421139369?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Cameras_Digital_Video_Accessories&hash=item439e72e7a9

I have no experience with that brand but from the looks of it, it is definitely in the "budget" range.

Do a bit of a search on ebay for benro monopods, they are reasonably priced from memory and quite a step up in quality over some of the "no name" brands.

My cheapie Monopod just couldn`t cope with serious use, went for the Manfrotto 681B with 496RC2 Ballhead, more expensive,$220,but will last a lifetime.Buy once,Buy well.

You are probably right Kevin - I looked again at that one and the weight capacity is a mere 3kg. Think I shall skip that one.

I bought one of these last year, and even paid less, the worst thing is that you can't remove the head, but apart from that, it's actually pretty sturdy, and feels well made for the price, after saying all this, I'd advise not buying it lol.

I paid about $50 for a Velbon from Camera House. Pretty solid, good latches. Good value I reckon.

Youll need to get a head though, thats for the stick only.

Lol - thanks Jayde. I was a bit concerned about the max weight capacity so I decided not to go for something like that one. Think I will just save the $ for something like the Manfrotto that Kevin mentioned

I bought the $34.99 one a couple of months ago and have been using it regularly with my 7D and 150-500 Sigma and have had no problems. the only thing is I removed the foot stand as I found this useless. I saw a couple with the same units at easter, they had their D3000's and kit lenses on them and were carrying them slung over the shoulder. This I wouldn't recommend and I keep the neck strap on. At least this gives me a monopod to use while I save for a good one if I find I need it.

heads on monopods arent really that important

In saying this I have a manfrotto 681b and a 234RC head for it (cheap but OK)

Ive just ordered a 393 gimbal head for mine too

A lightweight option is a Feisol Carbon Fibre monopod, Ive had one and its really good

I bought that one last year and the week after I got it I gave it away.
Totally useless for me and my 350d and 300lens.
Ended up getting a Cullmann from B&H in the US. Now with the new 7D it stays on the floor as it's not quite strong enough.
