I am heading over to New York in a couple of weeks and was looking for any recommendations for a good photo equipment shop. I know about B&H but that shop will be closed for a week for a Passover holiday. Anyone know of any other similar shop?
I will be looking in particular for Pentax lenses (new and second-hand), filters, etc. With the dollar being over 90c maybe there will be a bargain or two!!

If anyone knows of any good and "cheap" photo dealers (amongst the thousands that exist in NY), would love to hear from you

I think that you will find that Adorama and B&H will both be closed for that holiday period.

Seeing as representatives from both those companies are members of AP --- when the businesses names are mentioned on the forum either Helen from Adorama (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/member.php?u=1762)or Henry from B&H (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/member.php?u=1765) will usually answer the query.

Sorry I can't help you more mate but they are the only two that I know have a solid reputation, google the subject and lots of names come up, some I have heard of and in not so nice ways either. :(

You are right, both will be closed.

Yup .. After doing some internet searching it appears that they both (B&H and Adorama) close for 10 days over the Passover period, so I will have to wait till they open or go hunting for other shops

The other large(ish) shop is J&R, on Park Row by the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge. Take the subway to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.

It's great to visit B&H and Adorama in person of course; you can spend hours just looking around and the overhead crate distribution system is a fascinating thing itself at B&H but they do both offer excellent mail order facilities...

Thanks for that .. J&R looks interesting. Has lots of video cams as well . I think I will be taking a look at getting new one of those as well. I also notice that the shop is open on Saturdays so I expect they will have much shorter easter/passover holidays!!

Yeah, no closures for Easter or passover.

Strangely, they don't have any public holidays in the US for Easter. And the owners of J&R aren't Jewish.
