Mucking about with my new D700 the night I brought it home and captured Mr 3.5 doing his best doe eyed innocent pose ;)

The focus in sharp as a tack when I can get it in the right spot. I'm missing the focus a bit at 1.4 so this is one of the better ones.

yea, focus just off, it's not easy is it 1.4 on FX

Id crop this one just above his hairline, it's still a nice shot

I lined up the focal point between his eyes. Would it be better to be further back a bit or make it a few f/stops smaller? Much to get used to!

Even between the eyes if you are very close, and I suspect you are, then the actual eyes themselves will still be OOF. In this case, at 1.4, you are better off actually focussing on the eye that you want in focus because unless the subject is flat to you one eye will be OOF

1.4 is not really required though unless it's really dim or you are just really wanting to throw stuff OOF. I find f/2 to be much more forgiving

Or yes, get further away, but then you get other issues with the background becoming more of a problem

Congrats on the D700....you'll love it! Gorgeous shot too. 1.4 is tricky but there is nothing quite like it when you nail a shot....well maybe the Canon 1.2. :D

I like it - full focus range on a face is not always what we want. That dreamy look is super :)

I'm with Mal, I really like the dreamy look that's been created here, albeit by accident. :)
