Bibble 5 is out ...... if anyone still cares.

Disclaimer: the author of this post, as a young man, bought a copy of Bibble 5, which was "due out any day now" and was provided with a free copy of Bibble 4 to use for the few weeks it would take until the copy of Bibble 5 he had paid for was ready. This was probably back before the dawn of time.

I downloaded the trial version for the Mac last week and I was underwhelmed.

It has some nice things like Noise Ninja, layers and lens correction. It has some not so great things like its mishmash of user interface metaphors, but I guess I'm spoiled with respect to Aperture's interface.

Raw processing of the D40 NEFs is very similar. Bibble appears to apply fractionally more sharpening by default, that is replicated by adding one click of sharpness in Aperture. Aperture, on the other hand, has greater default saturation - closer to the treatment applied by ViewNX.

It also looks like Bibble tends to do less well with highlights, but I haven't played around enough to work out whether it's related to the lower saturation, or lesser tolerance of wider dynamic range, or something else.

I'll be sticking with Aperture for the time being.

Calx

When it comes to creating a mishmash of user interface metaphors, Bibblelabs are the undisputed World Champions.

I haven't tried B5 yet - despite having paid for the damn thing long, long ago - but B4 had, in there amongst the mishmash stuff, some of the best user interface design going around. Well, I guess when you combine so many different interface ideas, some of them have to work well. Also, I am fond of two or three of the excellent Bibble plug-ins (http://www.nexi.com/147) you can get for a remarkably small cost. Indeed, I wish I could use one or two of them with ACR and/or DPP.
