it might of been better with a white background.

hmm yes, i wouldve thought so as well. the background was actually my sofa and a blackboard sitting on it (didnt have anything white). i need to run down to get some white boards now eh. :)

Most product shots are taken in a 'light tent', that allows you to place your object in it and get shots without having shadowing (unless you want it), and creates a nice even light to work with. You can buy a light tent and some cheapo lights for under $100.00, or you can make one yourself (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/showthread.php?t=35332)

That was the next thing I was going to tell you but I had to run this morning for an AP meetup.
Having the soft lighting to either side of the tent contributes the light more evenly and shows more detail without the interference of shadows. Well minimizes shadows. Easy to make and you will like it.

And if you don't feel like cutting up a cardboard box, you can get one of those translucent white storage boxes from Crazy Clark's. The bonus being that everything packs away into the box when you're finished :)

yep light box studio is the way to go, i use it for shooting my jewellery when i finish jobs before i hand to customers, you can pick some great kits up for a lot less than you spend on other camera stuff..

The top of the hood is out of focus. Try a larger depth of field by using a smaller aperture to get the whole product in focus.
Hope this helps.
(Nice lens...)
