For the 36.6% of APers that use Firefox...
Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate 1 is due in a week or so with the final expected late June.

Here is a link to the new features in 3.5
https://developer.mozilla.org/En/Firefox_3.5_for_developers

But the biggest change is that it is even faster than 3.0 (which is fast).

RC1 this week hopefully.

As we reported in our review of beta 4, Firefox 3.5 features a new, faster, Javascript engine and private browsing mode, as well as improved video integration.

According to Mozilla, final quality assurance testing will adress everything from last minute bugs to the flawless functionality of extensions, plugins, accessibility, the automatic update feature and the top 500 websites.

Given the small number and low severity of remaining bugs on Bugzilla, the release candidate will likely mark the last test version of the browser before the final release, and is therefore on-track for release by the end of June.

Will firefox just update itself or does it have to be downloaded seperate?

It will eventually. :th3:
But in the mean time if you want the new one you will have to download it. It will upgrade your existing version.

One thing to watch is you plugins. Not all will work day one. It depends how lazy the plugin developers are.
I'm happy to manage that issue myself; but if your not sure wait a few weeks.

And today I received an update notification to go from 3.0.1 to 3.0.11 :confused013

That's the normal security update. 3.5 is a major upgrade which won't be 'forced' for some months.

What's wrong with that (other than that 3.0.11 has been out for some time now, my 3.0.11 on MAC was updated June 14)?

As long as there's no new stable version, Mozilla keeps updating existing versions (and perhaps even for some time after a new release). Hey, even MS still provides updates to XP whilst their latest and greatest (ahum) OS is around the corner and Vista has been out for a couple of years now...

I didn't think that there was anything wrong with getting the update notice.
I just thought it was a bit strange seeing as there is a new version coming soon.
On the up side is that at least Mozilla manage to keep there updates quick and simple, good customer service I reckon. :)

I tried it and found that my 2 most favorite extension didn't work (net Usage Item and Gmail manager) so I uninstalled it.
Hope they fix it before it is released.

You can 'force' them to work. You can also check the plugin site and see what level they are up to.
3.0 and 3.5 use the same plugin framework so most plugins should work - its just a matter of adjusting the valid versions.

I reinstalled and found the net usage update and got it working and am now using an alternative for gmail notifier.

Been running RC1 for two days now - no glitches other than making the plugins work - which do with the nightly tester tool.

3.5 trap for photographers....

3.5 has colour profiles awareness turned on by default. (about:config gfx.color_management ...)

What can go wrong?
Lets say you are working in AdobeRGB and you publish a jpg in that format to a comp.
On your computer it will look great!
BUT anyone without a profile sensitive browser (eg. IE anything) it will look flat!
So be careful with your colour spaces!
Always publish sRGB for the Web.

RC3 is out ... looks like it might me very early July.

NB: Mozilla don't give exact release dates - they say it will be ready when its ready - quality being more important than a date.
