Not sure what you mean by focusing the ring light?

Can you post an image of the rig you are using ?

Make a diffuser perhaps?

Not sure how you set it up but the LEDs emit pretty a narrow band of light and at very narrow colour range which the camera might not be able to see. They also emit UV which might throw the AF off?

The IR or near IR light on my speed lights let me focus in complete darkness with no problems.

what lens are you using, you might be trying to focus closer than the minimum focus distance of the lens.

I will post a picture of the rig soon. It's not a focusing problem, I'm using a 35-70mm f2.8 nikkor lens with macro and i can usually get a lot closer, it's just the light isn't being cast inwards enough.

Possibly use some cardboard angled inwards around the ring light with silver foil on the inside to "push" some light towards the subject. Without seeing the ring light setup not sure if this might help.
