I use skype - if both users have skype it's free.
Have used it to call my brother in Melbourne from here in Canada - saw my nephews for the first time in 10 months - and they use it frequently to talk to my sister-in-law's brother when he is in California where his gf lives.
Really easy to use and I love that you can see the other person while you're talking to them.

I love it too, I use it with my family in north QLD, I've just got a brand new little niece, so this gives me a chance to see her without having to go there. And I get to see her as she grows, and not after she's started primary school..lol

I'm another Skype user.
Find it very handy staying in contact with friends in Canada
Also use it like instant messenger for local contacts if I don't have the headset at work.

Yeah, Skype was priceless whilst back packing around the world. Not used much at home due to having a voip set up. The only reason I think internet calls haven't completely taken over, apart from line rental, is that this new technology is a bit confronting for the older generation and this is what the big two rely on. But it's only a matter of time....

You can call landlines for around 3c per minute and mobiles for around 20c per minute as well.....

Worldwide!

Just buy credit....

Skype is great.....

I use it a lot during my travels for work and also for conducting teleconferences with North American colleagues and clients. Had a six-hour teleconference last week on Skype to Canada to a freecall number (so Skype-to-phone, not Skype-to-Skype) and it cost me precisely NOTHING! Can't beat that...

yeah skype is great.. and with skype credit, you can also call landlines (but make sure you check the amount skype charges for that particular country)..

and if you only call people on one country, you can go and subscribe to that unlimited country (as long as the country is listed on their site)

I've got Skype on my iphone.

So as long as there is a good 3G coverage, i can make a skype call from my mobile to my mate in the US for free (as long as I don't exceed my monthly data allowance - I have never come close).

does it matter if your net connection is not that fast at times? my dodo wireless broadband can be a little slow at times.

Skype requires about 20 kByte / sec, so bandwidth doesn't have much impact on it. Note: that 20 kB/s is a minumum requirement, it can consume more than that. But... it needs to be able to reliably get that 20 kB/s, if it sometimes drops below that threshold or even switches off, you're lost.

Been using it for quite a while.
Apart from Oz I have contacts in the UK, US & Thailand.
Without Skype I would have to make do with email. Great with webcam too.
Any AP members please feel free to give me a call.
