So I know that compensation on the flash has an effect independent from the camera.
Question is, if I use ETTL and exposure compensation in camera, does the flash adjust and make my in camera compensation worthless, as the flash will try and adjust what the camera is doing?

I think, this is probably the most confusing aspect of flash photography.
What makes it harder is that Nikon and Canon do it differently.
I think Neil Van Niekerk will explain it better... :)

On Nikon (may be different to Canon), on my camera, the primary adjustment seems to be the ISO with iTTL but if I add exposure compensation, the flash increases and the ISO adjusts to meet the new requirements.

That said, I have found that different flashes in Nikon work differently (my SB600 vs SB700) as my SB700 cares which metering mode I am using and switches between BL-ITTL and ITTL while the SB600 doesn't so it could also come down to the flashes themselves for some of these issues.

:scrtch:
As long as they can add something. Though I reckon you don't need that friend Brian. Or am I I missing something that's obvious? :confused013
