At the expensive end of the market look at the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8, its a superb lens.
At the "Bang for bucks" end of the market look at the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 (non Vibration Control model) its a very good sharp lens.

The Nikon 17-55 f2.8 at the expensive end too. An absolutely cracking lens for dx bodies!

The Tamron 28-75 2.8 is a real gem on DX bodies. Quite useable wide open and cheap. I bought a demo model from the US about 2 years ago, best $300 I've spent on photographic gear no question.

17-55mm f2.8 get it secondhand if you want it cheaper, they are built well, otherwise the 17-50 tamron, but it is definitely not built as well.

Depends a bit on whether you plan to stick with a crop sensor. If there is a future upgrade to full frame contemplated, you may wish to keep options open by tending towards to 24 - 70mm or similar.

I just picked up a Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 (which is superb but expensive). In my searches, second hand examples were still relatively expensive.

Id actually recommend the 24-120

I'll second that, great lens for the price & quite versatile for the focal length.
